What is the difference between a signal analyser and a spectrum analyser?

2024-09-23

Although both signal analysers and spectrum analysers play an important role in the field of electronic measurement, they have significant differences in function, application scope and operating characteristics.

1. Functional differences

Signal analyser:

Signal analyser is a multifunctional electronic measuring instrument, which is mainly used for comprehensive measurement, analysis and debugging of different types of signals. It can not only display the time domain waveform of the signal, but also analyze the spectrum and time-frequency characteristics of the signal. The signal analyser can measure the amplitude, phase, frequency and other parameters of the signal, and has multiple functions such as time domain analysis, frequency domain analysis and modulation domain analysis. In addition, it can also process analog signals, digital signals and mixed signals, which is of great significance for the performance evaluation of communication systems, audio processing, vibration analysis and other fields.

Spectrum analyser:

The spectrum analyser is an electronic measuring instrument specially used to analyze and measure the spectrum structure of the signal. It mainly decomposes the signal into components of different frequencies to display the frequency distribution and power distribution of the signal. The spectrum analyser mainly focuses on the spectrum structure and power distribution of the signal, and can measure the frequency, amplitude, bandwidth, power spectrum density and other parameters of the signal. In the fields of communication, radio, radar, etc., spectrum analyzers have a wide range of applications, mainly used for signal analysis and optimization, frequency band planning and interference location.

2. Application Scope

The application scope of signal analyzers is relatively wider. It is not only suitable for communication systems and audio processing, but also for vibration analysis, electromagnetic compatibility testing and other aspects. Due to its rich measurement parameters and functions, signal analyzers can provide comprehensive signal analysis and evaluation functions.

Spectrum analyzers are more focused on signal spectrum analysis, so they play an irreplaceable role in fields such as communication and radio that require accurate measurement of signal spectrum characteristics.

3. Operational characteristics

The operation interface of signal analyzers is usually more complex, with more function settings and options. Users need to select appropriate measurement parameters and analysis functions according to specific application requirements, and make corresponding settings and adjustments.

The operation interface of spectrum analyzers is relatively simple and clear. Users can set and adjust measurement parameters through buttons or knobs, and view and analyze spectrum data through the display.
